At approximately 1:20 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, officials posted an announcement on Twitter advising that the base is closed and “only mission essential personnel are expected to report to work.”
All inbound and outbound traffic at the base has been stopped as an investigation is launched.
The reason for the order has not been disclosed.
Shortly after the initial announcement, a second message was posted on social media in error saying that the order had been lifted, according to officials.
“ALL personnel on main side Quantico are to shelter in place until further notice,” a follow-up tweet states. “Disregard any previous message sent in error. Repeat shelter in place until further notice.”
